🎠Director Lee Ju-han Shares Thoughts on Saejowi's "Small Happiness" (2024)
Did the play turn out as you envisioned during rehearsals?
"It exceeded my expectations! The actors beautifully captured the reality of North Korean human rights and the challenges of starting anew in South Korea, all with a touch of humor."
What’s your favorite part of the play?
"I like the scenes that bring North Korean life to the forefront. The 장마당 (Black market for goods and services in North Korea) scene and the classroom scene are my top picks. They highlight the differences and surprising similarities between North and South Korean cultures, especially in how we all share a love for things like K-dramas and Ramyeon. These moments offer a unique chance for students to connect with and understand North Korean culture."
How does this play differ from past ones?
"This time, we focused on the harsh reality of North Korean human rights under the regime’s control. However, we chose to present it with a light-hearted, humorous touch so that students can engage with these serious issues without feeling overwhelmed."
What message do you hope the audience takes away?
"I hope viewers remember that North Koreans are just as hardworking and curious as South Koreans, despite the differences. We're one people, after all. I want the play to inspire students to reflect on their own human rights and those of North Koreans."
We thank our theater team, the school authorities, and the students who supported and watched the theater with [happiness]! July, 2024, was a meaningful time to us sharing the message of unification, North Korean human rights issues, and small stories of North Koreans living in South Korea! We will be back in August, 2024!
